What happens in a breathwork session?

opening of a breathwork session

Opening

We begin with a grounding body scan, or guided meditation, to help you feel comfortable, and in your body in our space. I encourage a short verbal and non-verbal check in and update from your week over a cup of tea.

We set intentions for our session together, working towards your larger goals if you are doing a package of sessions with me. We agree what will and won’t happen in the session, and you are reminded that you can accept, reject or adjust suggestions and can revoke consent at any time.

Sometimes we might include more spiritual and energetic practices such as tarot cards, or smudging, calling in spirit support and guides, other times we can talk about the science behind breathwork.

Breathwork

The middle part of the session will be the experiential breathwork. If appropriate we might also include education of anatomy, physiology and neuroscience of optimal and sub-optimal breathing. Depending on what breathwork you are practicing, this may also include some music, sound healing and embodiment practices.

Integration

To close the session, you will have some time to be in silence, sometimes journaling, creating art or mark making. I will offer you time to reflect on your experience and share something you are taking away from our session, what you are leaving behind and something you are curious about. We may share some water, fruit or chocolate to help you fully ground.

I offer you practical guidance on how to ground yourself, optional home practice for between sessions and how to learn and navigate your aftercare needs.

What do I need to bring to the session?
Please bring comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement and relaxation, and a water bottle. You’re welcome to bring your journal and a pen and anything meaningful for your practice such as a photograph of loved ones, sacred objects, crystals, or tarot cards. All other materials will be provided.
How do I best prepare myself for the session?
To prepare for your session, please ensure you are sober, well-hydrated and avoid heavy meals right before the session. Arrive a few minutes early to settle in and create a calm mindset. It’s also beneficial to reflect on any specific goals or areas of focus you have for the session.
What should I be doing after the session?
We will have time for integration during your session and perhaps share some fruit. I will offer you tailored guidance to support your further integration.

After the session, take some time to rest and integrate the experience, making sure you are not rushing to your next activity. It’s normal to feel a range of emotions, so allow yourself space to process. Drink plenty of water and maintaining mindfulness of any insights or changes you experienced can also be beneficial; through journaling, walking or meditating.

Is there a waiver or consent form required?

Yes, you are required to complete a waiver and consent form before beginning breathwork sessions. This form ensures that you are aware of the nature of the practice, any potential risks, and provides me with important information about your health and well-being. Please review and complete the form at least 24 hours before your first session.

Jim’s coaching experience

When I first met Jim, a man in his 50s, he was already familiar with breathing exercises from online videos. Despite his efforts, he felt he needed in-person coaching to perfect his techniques. He wanted to ensure he was performing the exercises correctly and was seeking the immediate feedback and guidance that online content couldn’t provide.

Jim’s challenge was clear: while online resources had given him a foundation, he struggled with the limitations of not having a real-time teacher. The pre-recorded content left him guessing about his technique, lacking the personal feedback and hands-on guidance that an in-person coach could offer. He felt that virtual resources were insufficient for grounding himself in the fundamentals of conscious breathing.

Jim had a history of stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, which made his need for effective breathwork particularly pressing. Our work together began with an immediate impact. Within just five minutes of our first session, Jim experienced a significant shift. The real-time interaction allowed him to move beyond a rigid adherence to technique and see the broader picture of what conscious breathing could offer. He realized that the process was not just about performing specific techniques correctly but also about integrating breathing into his daily life and understanding its broader applications.

As our sessions progressed, Jim found that conscious breathing became an integral part of his day, rather than just a morning routine. He discovered how the practices we explored were synergistic with other things he was learning, creating a sense of interconnectedness rather than separate, isolated practices. This holistic understanding helped him feel that different aspects of his life were coming together in a meaningful way, which profoundly impacted his way of being.

Jim now feels calmer, more energized, and less impacted by everyday stressors. The breathwork techniques have significantly contributed to his ability to manage stress, anxiety, and panic attacks, enhancing his overall well-being. Overall, Jim described our work as empowering. The in-person coaching provided him with the confidence and clarity he needed to integrate breathwork more fully into his life, transforming both his daily experience and his overall sense of peace.
