What happens in a breathwork session?
To begin with, I will ask you to complete an intake process, including a medical form and if appropriate, your child can complete a more basic intake form.
When I begin working with your child, my first question will be: Do you know why I am here? I will ask them some questions about breathwork and we will play a few “get to know you” games.
I will help your child understand a little bit about what to expect in our sessions together. We begin building a relationship based on safety, trust and informed consent.
I will then observe your child’s breath when they are doing various activities, such as chatting, playing, concentrating, watching tv, and make tailored, foundational breath awareness exercises to begin with.
We will do some movement practices to help your child connect with their bodies, then a variety of fun breathwork practices following School Breathe curriculum that will be tailored to your child.
We may use some additional equipment – Hoberman Sphere, stuffies, fiddle toys, your child’s comfort or favourite toys and drawing materials. We may include parent(s) or not!
We will end our session with some suggested home practices to try.
I look forward to working with you and your family!

FAQ’s for children
Who is breathwork for children suitable for?
Children who would benefit from breathwork include school age children, children with anxiety, sleep challenges, mild asthma, ADHD, difficulty concentrating, difficulty in managing their emotions, children of parents with anxiety, and more!
Who is breathwork not suitable for?
- Severe Respiratory Conditions: If your child has severe asthma or a chronic lung condition, it’s important to check with a healthcare professional before starting breathwork. They may need special modifications or a different approach.
- Physical Disabilities: For children with mobility challenges, breathwork exercises can be adapted to ensure they are comfortable and able to participate safely.
- Cognitive or Developmental Disabilities: Some breathwork techniques require a certain level of understanding. We’ll always keep things simple, but if your child has developmental differences, we’ll choose exercises that work best for them.
- Behavioral Challenges: If your child struggles with behavior, breathwork can still be helpful, but it might need to be incorporated into their routine gradually. We’ll use positive reinforcement to help them engage.
- Sensory Sensitivities: If your child has sensory sensitivities, breathwork can be introduced slowly and gently. We’ll make sure the environment is supportive and free from triggers.
It’s always best to consult with your child’s healthcare provider if you’re unsure whether breathwork is right for them. We’re here to make adjustments to meet your child’s unique needs. Please book a discovery call to ask more questions.
What are the benefits of breathwork for children?
Breathwork can help children feel calmer, more focused, and better equipped to handle stress and overwhelming emotions. It supports emotional regulation, helps with managing anxiety, improves concentration, and can even boost physical well-being by teaching kids how to breathe more effectively.
Is breathwork safe for children?
Yes, breathwork is safe when tailored to your child’s needs and practiced correctly. I work with children in a gentle, age-appropriate way, ensuring that each session is trauma-informed and responsive to their individual nervous system. However, if your child has severe respiratory issues, it’s always a good idea to consult your healthcare provider first.
At what age can my child start breathwork?
Children can start learning simple breathwork techniques as young as 4 years old, though the practices will be adapted to their age and developmental stage. Younger children benefit from fun, playful techniques, while older children can explore more focused exercises.
How can breathwork help with my child's anxiety or stress?
Breathwork teaches children how to use their breath to calm their body and mind. By learning how to control their breathing, they gain a tool that helps them manage anxious feelings, stay present, and feel more grounded, especially in stressful situations.
How long are breathwork sessions, and what do they involve?
Sessions typically last 30-45 minutes, depending on the age and needs of the child. In each session, I guide your child through easy-to-follow breathing exercises that are both fun and calming. We may also use games, stories, or movement to make the experience engaging for your child.
Can I participate in the breathwork sessions with my child?
Absolutely! Parents are welcome to join the sessions, and it can be a great bonding experience. I offer child and parent and family breathwork sessions too, please book a discovery call to learn more. Practicing breathwork together can help create a sense of calm and connection at home.
How do you tailor breathwork for children with special needs (e.g., ADHD, autism, etc.)?
For children with developmental or behavioral challenges, I adapt breathwork techniques to suit their unique needs. I use simple, clear instructions and break the exercises into smaller steps. If your child has sensory sensitivities, I introduce breathwork gently and in a way that feels comfortable for them.
How can we practice breathwork at home?
I provide simple exercises and techniques that you can use at home to support your child. Practicing together can be a great way to weave breathwork into your daily routine, whether it’s during bedtime, before school, or when they’re feeling overwhelmed.
Can you bring breathwork to my child's school, sports club or work alongside a therapist?
Yes, absolutely! I would be delighted to offer breathwork to your child’s school, sports club or as extra support for therapy, please enter more details into the contact form and feel free to share my website with the provider so we can collaborate.
How quickly will I see results in my child?
Every child is different, but many parents notice positive shifts in their child’s mood, behavior, or ability to handle stress within just a few sessions. The key is consistency—practicing regularly helps deepen the benefits over time.
How often should my child do breathwork?
To see the best results, I recommend regular sessions—once a week is ideal to start, but we can also discuss what fits best with your family’s schedule. Practicing at home between sessions can also help reinforce the techniques your child learns.
Will breathwork help with my child’s sleep?
Yes, breathwork can be very helpful for improving sleep. By calming the nervous system, breathwork can help your child wind down more easily at bedtime, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night. We also teach techniques that can be practiced during the day that may encourage a natural shift in the way your child breathes when they are sleeping.
How do you personalize breathwork for my child’s needs?
At Rooted Breathwork, we tailor each session to fit your child’s unique needs and abilities. We regularly check in to make sure they are comfortable and adjust practices to ensure they feel safe, supported, and engaged. This individualized approach helps maximize the benefits of breathwork for your child.
What is informed consent, and how does it apply to breathwork for my child?
Informed consent means that before we begin breathwork with your child, we take the time to explain everything to you, and your child, including the benefits, what to expect, and any considerations to be aware of. This ensures you feel confident and fully informed before giving your consent for your child to participate. I also teach and encourage your child to express their no and their yes, and that they can change their mind at any time. School Breathe and Rooted Breathwork for kids use a “Kind Heart No Hands” policy. In 1-1 sessions, another adult must be present in the room.
